Hundreds of portable electrical generators have been sold in the Capital District during the past few days. Andy Fisher, a manager at Thorpe Electric Co. in Rensselaer, offered these safety tips for generator users.
*Don't attach generators directly to the house wiring unless you install a device to isolate the house wiring from the outside power lines. The best device is a "double-throw disconnect switch," but turning off the main circuit breaker will do in a pinch. If the generator is not isolated from power lines, he said, it could send power over the lines, wasting power and endangering repairmen working on the lines.
