Fed: Aust to fund regional police training
Australia will spend $15 million to set up a Pacific police training college in Fijiwhich some island states fear could lead to wider regional governance.
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says small states don't have the capacity to train their own police.
He's told Sky News he'll circulate a proposal for the regional police training collegeat the Pacific Islands Forum which begins in Auckland tomorrow.
New Zealand Foreign Minister PHIL GOFF says New Zealand backs the idea of police training.
But New Zealand and other Pacific nations such as Papua New Guinea are wary of it beinga step towards forming a regional police force.
