NSW: Norfolk hangs up on mobile phone technology
Norfolk Island residents have overwhelmingly rejected a proposal to introduce a digitalmobile phone network.
But the island's Chief Minister GEOFF GARDNER says the rejection doesn't mean sucha network has been ruled out for good.
He says support for new technology has traditionally been slow to build on the island, with television only being introduced in the 1980s.
Results from yesterday's referendum show almost twice as many people voted againstthe proposal as for it, with unofficial figures giving 356 yes votes and 607 no votes.
Mr GARDNER says the community has sent a clear message and the legislative assemblyneeds to consider that in making its decision.
The Commonwealth government has offered to fund just over half the $2 million neededto introduce mobile telephones to the island, with the island government providing therest.
